• Alfabeto Pittorico – by Antonio Basoli (1839)

Antonio Basoli (1774-1848), completed this lithographic pictorial alphabet in 1839, for his book “Alfabeto Pittorico”, elaborating upon 24 alphabetical/architectural drawings and one ampersand (omitting the J and the W), a.k.a: “Basoli’s Alphabet.” As a painter, professor, engraver, decorator… he was equally by trade an interior, set and curtain designer (for instance at the Theater Contavali), and taught at the Accademia dell Arti di Bologna, in Bologna, Italy. His classical training in art and literature (while also the son of an artist), could not diminish his appreciation for other artists, such as Piranesi.
